Discovering Murrindindi Scenic Reserve: Diverse Forest Landscape

Murrindindi Scenic Reserve, situated at the northern end of Toolangi State Forest, is a short drive from Healesville and less than two hours from Melbourne, Victoria. Established in 1981, this 815-hectare reserve features a diverse forest landscape along the lower reaches of the Murrindindi River, with tumbling waterfalls, soaring Mountain Ash trees, fern-filled gullies, and abundant native wildlife.

The reserve offers excellent opportunities for camping, bushwalking, birdwatching, and picnicking. Visitors can also enjoy fishing and paddling in the shallow waters of the Murrindindi River, which flows through the reserve. Whether you are looking for a day trip or a weekend stay, the reserve’s recreational activities and natural attractions make it an ideal destination.

Toolangi State Forest is the traditional land of the Kulin nation, with the Taungurung tribe caring for the northern part and the Wurundjeri tribe for the southern part. In the Wurundjeri language, Murrindindi means ‘mountain home,’ reflecting the area’s rich cultural heritage.

Camping in Murrindindi Scenic Reserve is a popular activity, with numerous camping areas along the river offering varied facilities suitable for tents and small caravans. Visitors can choose the spot that best suits their needs, surrounded by the reserve’s natural beauty.

The Murrindindi River Walk is a 12km trail that follows the river, offering spectacular views and a variety of forest types. For those seeking more challenging hikes, the Boroondara Track Circuit is a three-hour trek through the southern part of the reserve, rewarding hikers with fantastic views. Wilhelmina Falls, a highlight of the reserve, features a challenging walk leading to a 75-metre cascade down a steep granite rock face. The Mill Track Loop is a steep and challenging 10km loop walk, providing an immersive experience in the reserve’s beautiful landscape. For a shorter walk, the Murrindindi Cascades offers multiple viewpoints of the scenic cascades.
