Explore Watarrka National Park: Home to Majestic Kings Canyon
Located in Central Australia, a scenic three-hour drive from Uluru, Watarrka National Park shelters a dramatic landscape of rugged ranges, sandstone gorges and life-giving rockholes. This ancient environment provides a haven for diverse plant and animal life.
Undoubtedly, Kings Canyon is the park’s jewel. Towering red rock walls rise 100 metres above Kings Creek, creating a majestic gorge that leads to a plateau of rocky domes. The sheltered creek below offers a refuge for plant life, including the rare MacDonnell Ranges Cycad.
For a more leisurely experience, visit Kathleen Springs, a 21-kilometre drive from Kings Canyon. Here, a pleasant paved walking track, suitable for wheelchairs and prams, leads you to a permanent waterhole and the remnants of old stockyards.
Lace-up your boots and embark on an unforgettable adventure with the Kings Canyon Rim Walk. This 6-kilometre circuit takes you on a thrilling journey. Descend into the beautiful Garden of Eden, a hidden oasis with rare plants, before ascending to the rim for breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over the red sand dunes.
While the initial climb is challenging, the reward is unparalleled. The full Rim Walk takes approximately 3-4 hours and is best completed at sunrise to avoid the heat. Along the way, you’ll encounter iconic locations like Priscilla’s Crack (made famous by the movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert) and the weathered domes of “The Lost City.”
Beyond Kings Canyon Rim Walk, Watarrka National Park offers a variety of experiences. Explore the diverse landscape on designated 4WD tracks or discover hidden wonders on bushwalks and hikes. Camel tours provide a unique way to experience the desert, while a range of accommodation options cater to all budgets, from camping under the stars to resort-style comfort.
