Hike Overview
Immerse yourself in the beauty of Cocoparra National Park on the Store Creek walking track, a birdwatcher's paradise just 30 minutes from Griffith. This easy to moderate 2.5km loop offers a delightful escape into nature, taking roughly 1-2 hours to complete.
The adventure begins at Store Creek picnic area, complete with amenities like toilets, a gas barbecue, and parking. From there, follow the path as it winds alongside Store Creek, leading you through open woodland and onwards towards a captivating rocky gorge. As you meander through this bimble box wonderland, marvel at the vibrant hues adorning the steep cliffs.
This track is a haven for bird enthusiasts – keep your binoculars handy! Watch for the flitting turquoise parrots, the sleek dusky woodswallows, and the charming speckled warblers amongst the branches. In the shady areas, you might even spot the common brown butterfly fluttering by.
For a truly unforgettable wildflower experience, plan your visit for late winter to late spring. The vibrant displays of tufted bluebells, delicate pink finger orchids, and golden everlastings will leave you breathless.
And for the seasoned adventurer? The journey continues! Extend your exploration by following Store Creek for another 2km beyond the marked track. This off-trail path takes you alongside the creek, requiring some scrambling over small rock ledges to reach an impressive natural amphitheatre – a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
Tips
- There are some dry creek crossings to navigate.
- If you continue past the end of the walkway to the stone amphitheatre, this is another 4km return on an unformed walkway. Allow another 1.5 to 2.5 hours for this extension. This extension is advised for experienced walkers only.

Track Grade
Grade 3 (Moderate) - Walks for Most Fitness Levels: Grade 3 on the AWTGS represents moderate walking tracks. These are ideal for walkers with some fitness who are comfortable with some hills and uneven terrain. While suitable for most ages, some bushwalking experience is recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Tracks may have short, steep hill sections, a rough surface, and many steps. The total distance of a Grade 3 walk can be up to 20 kilometers.
Getting there
The adventure begins at Store Creek picnic area, complete with amenities like toilets, a gas barbecue, and parking. To get there, follow Rankin Springs Road through Beelbangera village towards Yenda for 16km. Then, turn left onto Myall Park Road and right onto Mount Bingar Road. Follow the directional signs for 7km until you reach the T-intersection with Whitton Stock Route Road. Turn right and cross the Store Creek crossing before turning left and following the road down to the picnic area. Remember, the roads are a mix of sealed and unsealed surfaces, suitable for most 2WD vehicles, but only accessible during dry weather.
